HEXAGRAM 33 · Dùn

Retreat

Timely retreat preserves what matters when conditions no longer support action.

☰ Above: Qian · Heaven☶ Below: Gen · Mountain

Meaning

Heaven above the mountain suggests necessary distance. Withdraw with principle and composure, without nurturing hostility; small responsibilities still deserve care.

FOR REFLECTION

What should I step away from to preserve my ability to act later?

The six lines

Read from line 1 at the bottom to line 6 at the top. These are paraphrases, not verbatim translations.

Line 1 Yin

At the rear of a retreat, danger is close. Do not press forward without a safe way out.

Line 2 Yin

A bond of yellow oxhide cannot be loosened. Be clear about the commitment you intend to hold firmly.

Line 3 Yang

Entangled retreat brings exhaustion and danger. Attend to limited household duties rather than taking on major affairs.

Line 4 Yang

Leaving something attractive requires self-command. Principle makes retreat possible; attachment makes it difficult.

Line 5 Yang

An honorable retreat keeps its purpose upright. Bring an involvement to a dignified close.

Line 6 Yang

An unencumbered retreat leaves no lingering doubt. Release an affair that no longer requires your involvement.
