HEXAGRAM 45 · Cuì

Gathering

Gathering requires a trustworthy purpose and responsible stewardship of shared bonds.

☱ Above: Dui · Lake☷ Below: Kun · Earth

Meaning

A lake above the earth gathers streams. The king at the ancestral temple evokes shared foundations and sincerity; a large gathering also needs preparation for the unexpected.

FOR REFLECTION

What truly connects this group beyond being in the same place?

The six lines

Read from line 1 at the bottom to line 6 at the top. These are paraphrases, not verbatim translations.

Line 1 Yin

Trust falters and the gathering becomes confused. A sincere call and a clasped hand can restore connection.

Line 2 Yin

Being drawn into the gathering is favorable; sincerity makes a simple offering sufficient. Accept a sound invitation honestly.

Line 3 Yin

Wishing to gather while sighing achieves little. Approaching may feel awkward, yet need not be blameworthy.

Line 4 Yang

A position that gathers others needs a genuinely beneficial outcome to avoid blame. Influence brings proportionate responsibility.

Line 5 Yang

An official position can assemble people without earning trust. Lasting integrity is needed to dispel regret.

Line 6 Yin

Sighs and tears at the edge of a gathering are not themselves a fault. Acknowledge the connection you are missing.
